Why this skill matters

Inference distractors often sound plausible because they could be true. The exam decision is narrower: which conclusion is best supported by this text. Evidence and certainty matter more than imagination.

Core principles

Collect related clues

Look for actions, changes, comparisons, tone words, and cause-and-effect details that point in the same direction. One ambiguous clue is weaker than several connected clues.

Use cautious language

A passage that suggests a possibility does not prove an absolute conclusion. Compare modal words such as may and likely with absolute words such as must and never.

Worked example

A researcher repeats a measurement with a calibrated instrument, obtains similar values on three trials, and notes that an earlier uncalibrated device produced inconsistent values. What is a reasonable inference?

  1. List the clues: calibration occurred, repeated values agree, and the old device was inconsistent.
  2. Infer that calibration likely improved measurement consistency, not that it guarantees perfect accuracy.
  3. Reject a choice claiming the new value is certainly correct because consistency alone does not prove accuracy.
  4. Choose the cautious conclusion most directly connected to the stated comparison.

Result: The conclusion is supported by the pattern while respecting the difference between consistent measurements and proven accuracy.

A four-step practice plan

1. Learn the decision rule
